heartbreak playlist ♡ ♪

Hi loves,

Today’s post is a bit different. We’ve all been there, and over time I’ve acquired quite the collection of songs to listen to when you’re going through heartbreak. Some of these songs are old and some of them are recent, I’ve tried to include artists that most of you will probably already know as I think that always helps when creating these sorts of playlists –  these songs have helped me over the years and I find them almost like therapy in ways, they’re the words I feel like I need to hear when my heart is in pieces. Enjoy ♡

All Too Well – Taylor Swift
I could sit here for hours and list all of the amazing breakup songs Taylor Swift has as she’s the queen of heartbreak, but this is always the one song that hits me the most. It’s really significant to me and became one of my favourite songs at a time in my life when I felt like these lyrics were the only thing I listened to, I could recite them backwards. This song really tells a story because all of the lyrics are different and it doesn’t just repeat the chorus every two seconds in order to create a catchy beat, every time I listen to it I close my eyes and I’m taken on a journey and transported back to that time in my life when this song was so relevant however, I’m at a point in my life now where I can listen to it and not feel sad about it anymore, which is one of my favourite feelings.

“Time won’t fly it’s like I’m paralysed by it, I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still trying to find it.”

The Only Exception – Paramore
Again, this is a song that was extremely significant to me at a time in my life where I was experiencing heartbreak, I used to play this endlessly with tears rolling down my cheeks (dramatic I know) wondering if I was ever going to be able to hear it without feeling sick at the thought of it. It’s a song I played often but because it was connected to such a bad feeling, every time I heard the first few seconds of the song I instantly felt ill and wanted to skip it as I couldn’t bear to feel the pain all over again. Luckily, I’m once again now at a point where I can play it and not feel like my heart’s being ripped out of my chest now (call me queen of exaggeration) and just appreciate the song for what it truly is. The lyrics aren’t generally focused around a breakup however, the actual sound and the feeling it gives off is quite a sad one and I know it’s been a key heartbreak song for a lot of people.

“And my momma swore that she would never let herself forget, and that was the day that I promised I’d never sing of love, if it does not exist. But darling, you are the only exception.”

The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore – James Morrison
The title of this song is pretty self explanatory and it’s ironic, because I first heard it in the background of a Skype call I was having with someone and thought it sounded really nice, so I asked them what the song was. Little did I know that later on this song would become the soundtrack to mine and this person’s situation, I still have a hard time listening to it because of where it came from and the fact I found out about it from a person that ended up really hurting me, but nevertheless it’s a beautiful song and the perfect one to listen to if you need a bit of healing.

“Well I can’t explain why it’s not enough ’cause I gave it all to you, and if you leave me now, just leave me now, it’s the better thing to do. It’s time to surrender it’s been too long pretending, there’s no use in trying when the pieces don’t fit anymore.”

Love Is A Losing Game – Amy Winehouse
This is one of my favourite songs in the world, I love Amy’s music so much and this song is probably my favourite from her. It’s one I usually play in the background when I’m trying to busy myself and take my mind off of the things that are making me sad. I find it therapeutic, Amy’s voice is so beautiful and the way she sings this fits the feeling perfectly.

“For you I was a flame, love is a losing game, five story fire as you came, love is a losing game. One I wish I never played, oh what a mess we made. And now the final frame, love is a losing game.”

Rainy Season – Hunter Hayes
I don’t normally listen to country music or Hunter Hayes in general but my old friend introduced me to his music and used to send me songs of his that she thought I’d like – this was one of them. I really love it and it makes me sad to listen to now because not only is it a heartbreak song, but it reminds me of my old best friend and the fact she was the one that introduced me to it.

“Say that you love me, even if it’s not true, and say that this storm is just passing through. Baby, tell me you’re not leaving, it’s just the rainy season.”

What You Gonna Do – Hunter Hayes Ft. Ashley Monroe
Again, this was another song my friend showed me from Hunter Hayes that she thought I’d like (the first song from him she ever showed me actually), there’s a version with and without Ashley Monroe but I’ve always preferred the version with her on the track as this is the version I was originally shown and it really carries the song in the way I think it should be felt, as they’re singing to each other and I just feel like it’s a lot more relatable this way.

“Tell me, what you gonna do when I’m gone? And where you gonna go when there’s nobody home, and who’s gonna love you, when you’re all alone? Tell me, what you gonna do when I’m gone?”

Need You Now – Lady Antebellum
Since we’re on the topic of me saying I don’t listen to country music here’s a sad song from a country group that I really like. I’m pretty sure everyone knows this song and it’s already included on every heartbreak playlist there is but I had to throw it in here just in case. I feel like this is something you’d play in the car as you’re driving away and thinking about all of the sad things you need to let go of.

“Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor, reaching for the phone ’cause I can’t fight it anymore…and I wonder if I ever cross your mind? For me it happens all the time.”

Boyfriend Jeans (Remix) – Grace
This is one of my favourite songs and one that I play on repeat even when I’m not feeling sad, just because I love it so much. The song is more upbeat but the lyrics and the way it’s sang is kind of like all the hope has been lost and you can hear the sadness in her voice which makes it more heartbreaking as the actual beat of the song contradicts that, it’s extremely catchy and one of my go to’s when I’m feeling hurt. I also love it because it’s a play on words in the sense that boyfriend jeans are an actual style that you can buy, yet she’s not talking about those, she’s talking about her boyfriend’s actual jeans. Hope that didn’t sound stupid.

“I’m wearing, yeah I’m still wearing your jeans, still roll them up still got that hole in the knee. I bought into the dream that you sold me, when you told me I’d never be lonely, the joke’s on me.”

All In My Head – Tori Kelly
I pray that no one I know in real life is reading these as I’m spilling my heart out here. I found out about Tori Kelly around 2011 before anyone really knew about her or before she became famous and she released the EP with this song on in 2012 – I used to listen to the EP on repeat because I loved her so much but this particular song never actually had any real meaning to me until this boy I really liked went off with someone else, even though he liked me at the time. The day I found out I was on the bus back from school and it was winter which meant it was pitch black outside, we were stuck in traffic and the rain was falling really heavily and this song came on shuffle and I just remember staring out of the window watching the rain fall down and realising all of the lyrics fit the situation perfectly, it’s super weird how one memory can just cling to a song like that. Anyway, I think almost everyone can relate to this song and I still listen to it now, just because I really love it and it always reminds me of that time (which I’m not sad about anymore) in fact, the memory almost makes me smile.

“Was it real or was it fake, was it all a mistake? Boy I just gotta know was it all in my head? Did you ever feel the same, was my mind just playing games?”

Secret Love Song Pt. II – Little Mix
I listened to this when Little Mix’s album first came out before part 1 of the song with Jason Derulo got released as a single, and I always preferred part 2 because I felt like it was so raw and you could seriously feel the emotion in it. I think it’s one of those songs where you just play it and just think, because you can’t do anything else. I don’t know, this song just really makes me think a lot even though I may not necessarily have anything to personally relate it to, it’s hauntingly beautiful.

“As you drive me to my house I can’t stop these silent tears from falling down, you and I both have to hide on the outside, where I can’t be yours and you can’t be mine.”

She Falls Asleep – Part 2 – McFly
There’s no other way to describe this song other than a beautiful, musical masterpiece. I’ve loved McFly ever since I was little and when they write a sad song, boy do they do it well. There’s 2 parts to this song, the first is the orchestra / instrumental introduction with the violins, piano etc. and it’s incredible, and the second part is the actual song with the lyrics. I grew up with it and I always remember just lying in bed in the middle of the night with my eyes closed and headphones in and letting the music just completely take me away to another place, the orchestra in this is just absolutely incredible and so breathtakingly sad, yet beautiful.

“She falls asleep and all she thinks about is you, she falls asleep and all she dreams about is you, when she’s asleep the air she’s breathing is for you are why she wants to live, she’s not got that much more to give.”

Close As Strangers – 5 Seconds Of Summer
This song doesn’t necessarily make me sad when I listen to it because it doesn’t relate to a specific time in my life however, I had to include it on here because I appreciate the lyrics so much and it’s a really great song. The title is pretty self explanatory but the song is just basically about feeling like you’re losing someone and drifting apart from them and not being sure how to fix it – something I think a lot of people can relate to.

“Are we wasting time, talking on a broken line… telling you I haven’t seen your face in ages, I feel like we’re as close as strangers.”

Trouble – Coldplay
This is a song I only recently discovered within the past 6 months which I’m kicking myself for since it came out 17 years ago in 2000, but it’s honestly such a beautiful piece of music. I found out about it because a contestant on a TV show performed it and I was completely captivated by the lyrics and thought wow, how have I never heard this song before? It’s so, so beautiful and again, one of those that haunts you for a while after you’ve listened to it. You can’t help but become utterly captivated by it, I feel like if you played it in a room full of people you’d be able to hear a pin drop. The piano in this is just amazing.

“Oh no, I see a spider web, it’s tangled up with me…and I lost my head, the thought of all the stupid things I’d said.”

Two Ghosts – Harry Styles
This is a super recent one and something I’m sure many of you will have already heard of, in terms of slow songs this is my favourite one off the album and I think it’s something everyone can relate to because unfortunately, the feeling of drifting away and becoming estranged from someone you love is an all too familiar feeling sometimes. I won’t get into how much I love Harry and his musical / writing / vocal / everything ability  because as you guys know I’d be here for the next 8 years but, if you haven’t listened to this already you really won’t regret it…and if you have listened to it already…go and listen to it again. 10 times over.

“The fridge light washes this room white, moon dances over your good side, this was all we used to need. Tongue tied like we’ve never know, telling those stories we already told, ’cause we don’t say what we really mean.”

I Have Questions – Camila Cabello
Again, this is a super recent song and one I’m sure many of you will have already heard of – one thing I love about Camila is that she feels everything so deeply and you can really see that in all of her songs, when she writes about something she completely pours her heart out and you can hear the pain in her voice and through her lyrics, which I think is an amazing and beautiful thing to be able to share with others. The story behind this song is so captivating and when you press play you can’t help but think about all the things that didn’t or don’t add up, and all the questions you still have…

“My name was safest in your mouth…and why’d you have to go and spit it out? Your voice, it was the most familiar sound, but it sounds so dangerous to me now.”

TALK ME DOWN – Troye Sivan
This song to me is really haunting, and I know I’ve said that about probably every other song so far but this one really is. I found this song so magical to start with, as I feel like it just takes you into a completely different reality…there’s just something about it. Then I found out that the music video for this song was part of a trilogy with Troye’s other two songs Wild (I’m sure you’ve heard of it) and Fools. If you watch this trilogy of videos it makes everything so magical, scary, haunting, captivating and beautiful all at the same time as they each tell a story, each song relating to a beginning, middle and end. This song just really does something to me and I don’t know what it is, but I can’t stop playing it.

“I wanna hold hands with you, but that’s all I wanna do right now, and I wanna get close to you, ’cause your hands and lips still know their way around…and I know I liked to draw that line when it starts to get too real, but the less time that I spend with you, the less you need to heal.”

Towers – Little Mix
Something that I listened to a lot in my last years of high school when I was a very heartbroken girly and felt like I could channel all my feelings through this song because the way it was sang was so full of emotion and pain. I remember it was winter which meant it was so cold and dark outside and I’d just lie in the bath and think about everything while this echoed out across the room. Very dramatic, very movie-esque but nevertheless, a really great song and I’m very grateful it exists. Thanks girlies.

“You never bought me flowers, never held me in my darkest hours, and you left it so late that my heart feels nothing and towers…once we were made like towers, everything could’ve been ours, but you left it too late now my heart feels nothing, nothing at all.”

Suicide – James Arthur
A song I rediscovered recently and realised how much I loved it, James Arthur in general has such a powerful voice that’s full of emotion, so when he sings a song like this it makes it all the more heartbreaking.

“If somebody asks how we died, please look them straight in the eye…call it suicide, don’t fabricate, just tell them babe, it was suicide…don’t sugarcoat it, just let them know.”

Nicest Thing – Kate Nash
This is a weird one for me and the song I thought I’d end this post with, I’ve been listening to it for years now and it’s a song that I don’t play very often but when I do,  all I can do is just sit and listen. The lyrics are so hard-hitting and I think something a lot of people can relate to, the whole feel of it is just very quiet and sad. It’s less of a song and more just lot of words and thoughts being sang lightly so that they sound less somber. I really would say this is a good song to listen to, sometimes I feel like I need it.

“I wish you couldn’t figure me out but you’d always wanna know what I was about, I wish you’d hold my hand when I was upset, I wish you wouldn’t forget the look on my face when we first met.”

I still have so many more songs that I could include here but I feel like I’d be writing for weeks, so here are the ones I’ve chosen for now – I’ve chosen songs that are more current and artists I think people might know but I have a lot more from different genres and artists that maybe people won’t have heard of, so let me know if you want a part 2 and I’ll make another post for you guys♡

All my love,

Chloe .xx
