A super different post from me today, I’ve always said this blog is like my personal journal that you guys are able to read so I’m not too worried about embracing different styles and writing new things. I read a post on blogging tips once and someone had said that if you want to be a ‘good’ blogger you need to stick to a specific theme and be consistent with it, which I can understand but nevertheless, I don’t see myself as a specific type of blogger, this isn’t a fashion blog or a book blog, it’s just my blog, I guess – I write a lot and just kind of go wherever it takes me, so I hope you guys don’t mind that this is a little different from what I usually write.
You’ve probably all heard of this tag, it’s taken over Youtube lately and just about everyone is making videos on it and I must say, I’m completely and utterly hooked. I don’t know what it is specifically that I find so interesting but I could sit there and binge watch these baby name videos for hours, I find it so interesting to hear what other people like but also the reasons they wouldn’t necessarily use the names themselves for their own children.
I’ve always had a thing for names and I’ve had a list of baby names on my phone since I was about 16 now, which I used to think was weird but since discovering these videos, it seems like a lot of people do it! I have a list of boy and girl names that I absolutely love but don’t necessarily know if I’d be brave enough to use on my own children, and here’s why…
P.S. – I had 14 girls names and 8 boys names but have shortened it down for the sake of this post.
Note: I’m into super ethereal / unique names, so some of these are a little out there!
Note 2: If your name is on this list I think it’s absolutely beautiful and am in no way intending to offend or be negative, these are just my personal reasons for why I may not use them on my own children. I only want to spread love here. xx
Inka – I love this name and think it’s so beautiful. I only know one of one person called Inka and that’s Inka Williams which is where I got this name from, it’s so beautiful but I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to use it on my daughter as it’s kind of out there and it’s also not very English at all (I’d say it was kinda exotic) so I don’t know if people would look at me and be like…really?
Ophelia – This is literally the most beautiful name ever and makes me think of a princess, I only actually found out about this name as Ariana (Grande) named her dog Ophelia and I just thought it was so ethereal and beautiful. The reason I don’t know if I’d use this name is because I can’t picture myself having a daughter called Ophelia, which might sound weird but in my head it just doesn’t manifest and I don’t know if this would sound silly on a little girl, maybe it is more suited to beautiful doggos.
Brooke – My mum has always really liked this name and so have I, but never enough to consider it something to put on my baby name list. However, the past year or so it’s kind of grown on me and here we are, the reason I don’t think I’d use this name is because I don’t know if I like it enough to dedicate my daughter’s entire existence to it (sorry if that sounds dramatic), it’s also not ethereal enough for me and I think it’s become a lot more popular in the last few years which I’m not sure about, since I like super unique and uncommon names.
Violet – I like this name because it’s dark yet also dainty, dark in the sense that purple is a deep colour and I’m into things like that but also dainty because it’s the name of a flower and just generally sounds very light and nice. Again, I don’t think I’d use it as my daughter’s name because there are others that I like more than this, it’s not one at the top of my list however – I do think it’s a really sweet name.
Elle – I love this name, I think it sounds so elegant and pure. More recently I’ve become obsessed with names that begin with ‘E’ as I think they sound so elegant which is something I always look for in a name. The reason this is on the list is because from just hearing it in general conversation, people might mistake it as ‘El’ like a shortened version of Eleanor or Ellie which I don’t like (again, no offense if this is your name!! ♡).
Luna – This name. As you guys know, I’m obsessed with the moon, absolutely obsessed. This is the only kind of moon name I can think of that doesn’t sound ridiculous and so when it comes to moon names, I don’t exactly have much variety, Luna is one of my favourite words as 1). The moon and 2). It just generally sounds beautiful and ethereal, however, I cannot imagine it as the name of a person. A black cat, maybe, but a human in general? I can’t imagine it at all. I just don’t think it’s a person name which sucks but maybe I’ll use it as a middle name if I’m feeling brave…
Sophia – I absolutely love this name and think it’s so, so beautiful and can absolutely imagine it as the name of a little girl, I also think it’s one of those names that will suit you no matter what age you are in life. The only reason it’s on this list is because it’s becoming more popular as time goes on and by the time I have kids it could be even more popular and I don’t want my daughter to have the name as lots of other people in her class! However, I’m hoping this doesn’t happen because I really love it and even if it does, I’ll probably still use it as a middle name.
Isla – This name has really grown on me lately and I think it has on a lot of other people too, as it suddenly seems to have become quite a popular name. The only reason I wouldn’t use this name is because people might keep pronouncing it wrong i.e. – ‘is-la’ instead of ‘eye-la’ and also because I feel like it’s going to become super popular in the future.
Bea – This is another one of those sweet and dainty names that I love and think is absolutely beautiful. It’s on this list because (maybe I’m just being stupid here) but the only people I know of called Bea are actually called Beatrice and have just created it as a nickname for themselves. I wouldn’t want other people thinking this was the case if I named my daughter Bea and I also don’t know if making my child’s full name a 3 letter shortened version of a different name would be justified, you know?? Is Bea a justifiable first name?? Just Bea?? I don’t know, maybe I’m over thinking it. When I do have kids this name will probably still be in the running and if not, I might make it a middle name. I’m also not worried about the connotation of bees with this name because well, I love bees. Save the bees 🐝
Fletcher – I really like this name at first glance and it’s been on my list for such a long time now I can’t even remember when I first put it on here, I feel like it’s quite quirky and unusual but not super unique or weird – I don’t know of anyone with the name Fletcher (unless you count that kid from Ant Farm on Disney Channel) which is surprising considering it’s not super out there or anything, however, I wouldn’t use this on my own child because there are other names that I prefer over it and now that I’m writing about it, I’m not sure if I even like it as much as I first did! (3+ years ago).
Ashton – I love this name and have for a while now, it’s not very unusual or even unique yet I personally don’t know of anyone with the name apart from obviously Ashton Irwin (and I’ve just googled and found Ashton Kutcher but I don’t even know anything about him so we’ll class him as irrelevant for the sake of this point). I can definitely imagine a little boy called Ashton, but I probably wouldn’t use this name because I personally can’t picture myself having a little boy with that name, is that weird? I like the name on others and can definitely picture other children with it, but not my own.
Bailey – I’m always conflicted with this name and know I won’t use it for my son but thought I’d include it here anyway. I’d definitely prefer the name Bailey for a girl but personally would want to use it for a boy, however, where boys are concerned I feel like it’s become such a common & chavvy name because every (male) I know of called Bailey seems to be the world’s biggest chav. I feel like this name is really hit or miss and depends on the context, it can either be super common and bleh or super nice and lovely. This is one of those names where the people associated with it I’m not keen on and therefore I’ve kind of pushed the name to the side which sucks because I used to really like it for a boy, but now I only really like it for a girl.
Oscar – I love this name, I think it’s very traditional and quite British yet not too overused or boring. This might sound weird but I don’t have any negative connotations towards the word Oscar – you know sometimes when you hear a name and want to roll your eyes or just go ‘ugh’ because there’s maybe people that you don’t like with the name and so subconsciously you end up disliking it and instantly feeling negative whenever you hear it? Yeah. There’s none of that with this name, all of my feelings towards it are simple and lovely. The only reason it’s on this list is because I’m extra and feel like it isn’t as unique or out there as I’d want it to be and I also don’t feel like it would go with the name I want for my babygirl. Pairing is key!
Harley – I like this name because it’s different but not too different, though I probably wouldn’t use it because I feel like it’s one of those names that’s getting more well known as time goes on – I feel like it’s quite popular with young couples and I can only imagine that will grow as time goes on, there are also other names that I prefer over this one which is why I wouldn’t use it.
River – I absolutely love this name so much, it’s unusual, unique and almost ethereal, yet not weird. I can definitely imagine this as a little boy’s name and obviously there are a couple of people with this name that you’ve probably heard of – the most famous being River Phoenix. The only reason the name is on this list is because I have a girl’s name that I 100% know I’m going to use for my daughter (not on this list) and River just doesn’t go with that name – together they sound too cliché and I can literally already hear people making jokes about it in my head. For that reason, I don’t think I’ll be using this as a first name which I hate, because it would’ve been my first choice otherwise – I can still use it as a middle name I suppose though. *sad face*
Eren – I literally only added this to the list a couple of days ago so don’t have that much to say about it yet, I just really like it. I’m not going to lie, I only know of this name because my brother watches / plays Attack on Titans and that’s another reason I don’t think I’d use this name because everyone would probably relate it back to that. I also don’t know if it’s cliché to even suggest this name, obviously I don’t watch Attack on Titans so there could be some people reading this and rolling their eyes right now, so I apologise! I just really like the name because it sounds like a mixture between Erin and Aaron, though I am aware that it is Turkish which is another reason I probably wouldn’t choose it.
There’s one girl name and one boy name that I 100% know I’m going to use for my children and (me being my overprotective and paranoid self) I’m not going to include them in this post because I don’t want to jinx anything and am so set on using these names. However, I hope you enjoyed something a little different from me today and I’ll speak to you all soon.
All my love,
