an aesthetically pleasing book haul

Hi my loves,

I’m…yeah. I have no excuses. Here’s another book haul. Someone take my credit card away from me. I do have a (kind of) excuse / reasoning behind this particular book haul though so, here goes…

I had this strong urge to just…buy some beautiful books. I hardly ever buy books for their covers or because I think they look aesthetically pleasing and I just thought yanno what, I’m gonna buy some books that look beautiful so that they look beautiful on my shelves (and also so that I can read them, of course). I needed a bit of reading motivation to get back into the swing of things for 2020 and so I was like yeah, I’m gonna buy some books with some sick covers, basically. I’ve never really done that before and so I was excited.

I 100% prefer to read paperbacks over hardbacks because it’s just a better experience all round, but for a good, solid, beautiful book…you need to buy it in hardback. They just do the job better in terms of the visual aspects. As I said, I don’t really like to read hardbacks but for this little spree that’s what I was going for because…I just needed the aesthetics, basically. 100% going to do this more often from now on though because it honestly made the whole thing so much more exciting.

This all happened because I was in a book store around…6/7 months ago now? And there was this book that completely caught my eye. It wasn’t on display where you could see it, it was kind of tucked away on the front of a shelf behind a corner but I saw it and was just absolutely mesmerised by it, I’ve honestly never been so drawn to a book before in my life, ever. It was the strangest thing. I was contemplating over whether I should buy it or not but then I read the blurb and thought actually, it’s probably not really my thing and so I talked myself out of it.

And then I went home and spent the next 6 months thinking about the book and wishing that I’d bought it to which, the obvious answer would be to just…go back and buy it. However kids, I could not for the life of me remember what the book was called, who the author was or what the cover even really looked like. I only remembered about 30% of the cover since over time it had all slipped my memory and so I just could not find it anywhere and I was distraught basically. I was like Chloe why didn’t you buy it when you saw it the first time.

And then last week I took one final attempt at finding the book again and alas…I found it.

Deeplight
Frances Hardinge

I do not know what it is about this book cover but it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid eyes on. I’m literally hypnotised by it and I have no idea why. I can’t stop looking at it. Objectively, there are books with more beautiful covers out there but for me personally, this one is top of the top. I don’t know what it is about it. I’m like…a magpie seeing silver for the first time. It’s just the most beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and well put together…image…concept…thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve never been so drawn to something before.

It’s also signed !! Which is super nice as well (because as you guys know, I love signed stuff).

I feel like this is…something. Like she’s going to be my new favourite author or something. I don’t know, I feel like this is all significant and I’m writing it here now to call it first and if I happen to be wrong then you can all come back to read this and laugh at me for being dumb. Either way, this book is the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

The Deathless Girls

Again, have you ever seen anything so beautiful. I want this whole cover tattooed on me. Right now. There’s this certain type of book design that I really, really love and it’s something along the lines of this. I don’t know how to describe it but it’s a category that this book and Deeplight fall into…I can’t explain the style but basically, any book that falls into this category I just automatically love. I don’t know anything about this book but I think it’s YA? I think it may be a little young for me but at this point I don’t care because the cover is just so beautiful – the inside is…heavenly. Am I really getting this obsessed over a dustjacket and a cover?…Yes, yes I am.

Just look how beautiful it is !! I have never seen anything so pretty IN MY LIFE.

Crossfire

Now, this last one was just a book I added to my cart in order to qualify for free shipping. When I said this in a previous book haul everyone was like Chloe !! Use Book Depository !! It’s free shipping !! And I’m here to tell you that I always use Book Depository. Always !! But sometimes on very rare occasions I don’t use Book Depository, and that’s because sometimes I need to use Waterstones to buy beautiful hardcovers like this. So do not panic. I hear you. I’m there.  I really wanted another hardback to complete my little haul and then after scrolling through the website for a bit I saw this one. The cover isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as the others but I thought it looked interesting anyway – this one is also a signed copy. Upon arrival…this book is huge, like, one of the heftiest books I now own. It’s giant !! I absolutely didn’t expect it at all so I was pretty amazed when it arrived (maybe I’m just easily impressed). Again, I don’t know anything about this book but it kind of gives me Angie Thomas vibes and I love her, also something that I did discover upon doing a little research is that it’s actually the fifth book in a series which I didn’t realise…well done Chloe. I think I’ll be able to get away with reading it without having read the rest of the series but…we’ll see. Wish me luck.

I bought this one a couple of weeks after the others and even though it’s not “aesthetically pleasing” per say (or a hardback for that matter) I am so excited to read it. I won’t be able to for a while though as this is a book I bought to read on holiday when I go to Mexico in a few months! Reading the blurb it just seemed like the perfect holiday read, and not in a Summer love cliche romance kind of way (as you guys know they’re not my thing). I can’t wait to read it and I just keep staring at it on my shelf and thinking…soon…soon. Do I need help? Possibly.

And there we have it loves! I said in my last post that the hauls were going to stop soon but eh…maybe not. I need to gain some self control on the spending before we get to that point. It may never come.
